The National Weather Service says snow will begin moving into the Sioux Falls area on Tuesday afternoon, with between three and six inches of snow expected by Wednesday night.

While the snow is expected to begin on Tuesday afternoon, it will likely be at its heaviest by midnight, the National Weather Service said. Some areas, like Huron, Chamberlain and Gregory, are only expected to see one to three inches, while cities like Beresford and Vermillion could see between five and eight.

The National Weather Service says travel could be hazardous during the morning commute on Wednesday due to low visibility and slippery roads after the snowfall picks up late Tuesday night. Although the wind is expected to be light, that also means more snow will stick to the roads, the National Weather Service says.

Warnings and Advisories

Clay and Union counties are under a winter storm warning between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday, with five to seven inches of snow a possibility.

Other counties, including McCook, Minnehaha, Hutchinson, Turner, Lincoln, Bon Homme and Yankton, are under a winter weather advisory between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday, with three to six inches of snow a possibility.
