Winter storm warning in effect for Sioux Falls, nearby areas

A winter storm warning is in effect for Sioux Falls until noon on Wednesday after at least seven inches of snow fell on the city overnight.

The warning is in effect for the following South Dakota counties: Brookings, Lake, Moody, Minnehaha, Turner, Lincoln, Clay and Union. A winter storm warning means travel could be difficult or impossible due to severe weather conditions.

The National Weather Service says as of 6 a.m., seven inches of snow has fallen on the city of Sioux Falls, with another one to two inches expected by noon. A snow alert was issued early Wednesday morning.

When will the snow end?

For Sioux Falls, the snow will likely taper off between 10 a.m. and noon, the National Weather Service says. For areas to the west, it will end between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., while areas to the east will see the snow wrap up between noon and 2 p.m.

Road conditions and school closures

Many roads in the area are slick and snow-covered. Check the South Dakota Department of Transportation's road conditions map before you head out to your destination.

Many area schools are also delayed or closed on Wednesday due to the snow. The Sioux Falls School District is starting two hours late, along with Sioux Falls Catholic Schools and Sioux Falls Lutheran Schools.
