One person was killed after a semi-truck crashed into a bridge on Interstate 29 between the Baltic and Dell Rapids exits on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a woman has died after a semi truck crashed near Dell Rapids on Thursday morning.

The crash occurred just after at 6:50 a.m. Thursday when a 2018 Kenworth T370 semi-truck went over a guardrail and struck a bridge pillar on Interstate 29, about two miles south of Dell Rapids, South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan said.

The 34-year-old driver died at the scene of the crash, Mangan said. She was the only person involved and has not yet been identified.

The vehicle that crashed was an Avera McKennan semi, the health system confirmed Thursday.

"Upon learning of the tragic fatal crash involving one of our Avera family members this morning, our hearts were broken," a statement from Avera McKennan read. "Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the family of our employee during this most difficult time."

Avera described the vehicle as a "nuclear medicine truck."

"Avera McKennan experts are working with the South Dakota Highway Patrol and other agencies to ensure there are no public safety issues that have not been addressed," the statement read.
