Searchers rescued two 12-year-old boys from the Open Cut mine near Lead, South Dakota on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Two boys are safe after they were rescued from a South Dakota mine early Sunday.

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says that at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, the 12-year-olds walked into a steep area on the west wall of the Open Cut mine near Lead and could not get out.

Fifty-five people worked until 3:30 a.m. to get the boys out, the sheriff's office said, eventually reuniting them with their parents at about 4 a.m. Searchers struggled against darkness, wet weather and often-inaccessible terrain.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury during the rescue, but the boys were not hurt, the sheriff's office said.
