A Sioux Falls student was suspended from school and arrested after police say he was found with a knife at school on Monday.

The 14-year-old boy was originally called to the principal's office at Memorial Middle School for using his cell phone, which is against school rules, said Lt. Mike Colwill of the Sioux Falls Police Department.

When the boy was asked to empty his pockets in the principal's office, administrators discovered a four-inch folding knife in his pocket, Colwill said.

Colwill said the boy was suspended from the Sioux Falls School District and arrested on a charge of having a weapon on school grounds, a class 1 misdemeanor.

The boy didn't appear to threaten anyone with the knife, Colwill said, and police are unsure what his intentions were. The boy was released to his parents after his arrest.
