A volunteer firefighter died after suffering a medical issue while responding to a wildfire in western South Dakota on Wednesday.

Dwain Hudson, a volunteer firefighter with the Argyle Volunteer Fire Department in Custer County, experienced a medical emergency while traveling to a wildfire about nine miles south of Jewel Cave just after midnight, the fire department said in a press release.

Firefighters and emergency personnel tried to resuscitate Hudson, who was taken to Custer Regional Hospital, where he died, the department said.

The Custer County Chronicle reported that the cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack.

Funeral arrangements for Hudson are pending, according to the press release.
