One kayaker was rescued from the Big Sioux River after their kayak flipped in the water on Friday night at Rotary Park in Sioux Falls.

Authorities were called to the river at Rotary Park at 8:20 p.m. for a report of a kayaker in the water with the kayak stuck upside down against a tree.

When the fire department arrived, one person was caught against a large tree in the middle of the river, Battalion Chief Steve Brunette said in a news release.

Crews rescued the kayaker from the debris and brought the person to shore, Brunette said. The person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The kayaker was not wearing a life jacket, according to the news release.
