Coronavirus in South Dakota: Five more deaths, 49 more cases confirmed

Five more people have died of the coronavirus in South Dakota, and the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state increased by 49 on Tuesday.

South Dakota has a total of 39 COVID-19 deaths as of Tuesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. Twenty-five deaths have occurred at senior living facilities, according to Argus Leader tracking.

The five deaths announced Tuesday were all Minnehaha County residents. Four were women and one was a man. One was in the 30-39 age range, one was in the 40-49 age range, one was in the 50-59 age range and two were in the 80+ age range, according to the state health department. The person in their 30s who died had an underlying medical condition.

South Dakota has a total of 3,663 COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. That doesn't include people who show symptoms or are asymptomatic but are not tested. The positive rate for coronavirus tests on Tuesday was 7.9%.

Cases in Minnehaha County increased by 26 to a total of 2,978, and Lincoln County has a total of 190 cases, according to the state health department.

The state has 1,315 active COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. Recoveries statewide increased to 2,309. The state health department says 271 total people have been hospitalized during the pandemic, and 74 are currently hospitalized.

So far, 825 Smithfield employees have recovered of the 853 employee cases and 239 close contacts have recovered of the 245 close contact cases, state epidemiologist Josh Clayton said. 

Coronavirus cases in Brown County increased by five to 132 on Tuesday. There are now 77 coronavirus cases connected to DemKota Ranch Beef in Aberdeen, according to Clayton.
