South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame to add 10 members: Here's a look at the inductees

Doug Eggers had an outstanding football career at South Dakota State before playing linebacker for the Baltimore Colts from 1954-58.

Two former NFL players and the state's all-time amateur baseball home run king headline a group of 10 new inductees into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame for 2020. 

The banquet is scheduled for April 25 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, with tickets available beginning in March.

Doug Eggers graduated from Wagner High School and had an outstanding football career at South Dakota State before playing linebacker for the Baltimore Colts from 1954-58. Darwin Robinson of Redfield was a record-setting football player and track athlete at Dakota State College who was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1974.

Kevin Leighton of Madison hit over 500 home runs in his long amateur baseball career, winning numerous state titles along the way.

Kevin Leighton was a longtime amateur baseball standout in South Dakota.

Other inductees in the Class of 2020 include:

  • Bruce Conley, longtime Argus Leader sportswriter
  • Ken Ruml, longtime Howard wrestling coach 
  • Heather Sieler, basketball and track athlete for Huron High and SDSU
  • Randy Fletcher, Dakota Wesleyan basketball standout
  • Steve Withorne, Rapid City/DWU athlete and longtime referee
  • Ron Mitchell, successful coach for deaf athletes
  • Laverne Diede, early trailblazer for women's sports

The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame was started by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association and is now managed by a group of volunteers from across that state.
