Interstate 29 closed from Sioux Falls to North Dakota border

Cars travel on Interstate 29 Thursday, Feb. 7, in Sioux Falls. A blizzard waring was issued until midnight. The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising drivers to not use roads north of Dell Rapids, including Interstate 29 to the North Dakota border.

Interstate 29 from Sioux Falls to the North Dakota border will be closed Thursday evening, announced the South Dakota Departments of Transportation and Public Safety.

The stretch of I-29 from Brookings to the North Dakota will officially close at 5 p.m., while the Sioux Falls to Brookings stretch will officially close at 6 p.m.

The closure comes after a number of crashes on the interstate Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls issued a blizzard warning for eastern parts of the state that will last until 12 a.m. Friday.

There are a number of other no travel advisories in the northeast part of South Dakota for highways and roadways separate from the interstate.

"Motorists are strongly encouraged to change travel plans and stay where you are until crews are able to make roads safe for travel on Friday," the news release read.

Plow crews have also been removed from interstate routs due to visibility issues.
