Martha B. (Marty) Schaufele, 71, died peacefully on May 31, 2020. Marty was born to Van and Rachael Bettis on March 26, 1949. She attended Little Rock Public Schools before going to the University of Arkansas where she was a Razorback cheerleader and on the field for the Great Arkansas Shootout in 1969. After graduation, she married her husband of 49 years, Mike. Marty is survived and dearly missed by her husband and daughter, Janet Smith and husband, Chip, of Kansas, City, Missouri, daughter, Ann Blair Schaufele of Little Rock, precious grandchildren, Gracie, Ella and Glen Smith, as well as the many friends she considered as family. While her children were in school, Marty did a number of jobs but was always home for them when school was out. Marty's great passion was helping others through her volunteerism. In 2011, she received a Community Service Award from the Governor's office and Arkansas Department of Volunteerism for her work at St. Vincent Hospital. She also was the recipient of The Joan B. Wilson Hospitality Award/St. Vincent Auxiliary. Marty was honored as a 1981 Outstanding Woman of America. She was a founding volunteer of The Clinton Presidential Library and served on the boards of UALR Women's Athletics, Child Study Center Auxiliary-UAMS, Fine Arts Club, Family Service Agency, Junior League Sustainer and was an Ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Marty was a member of the Twentieth Century Club, Junior League of Little Rock, PEO, St. Vincent Auxiliary and ICU volunteer, St. Mark's Episcopal Church Choir, Easter Seals Arkansas, Little Rock Garden Club, Aesthetic Club, NWD Golf Club and Alumni Razorback Cheerleader. She received an award from the Garden Club of America for a photography exhibit and this exhibit was selected to be kept in The Smithsonian. After her lung transplant, Marty started a free mentoring service for people who were facing or had just received a transplant. She had clients from numerous states and from England, South Africa and Trinidad to whom she gave first-hand, practical advice about what to expect. She was thrilled when one of her clients received their lungs last month. She and Mike loved to travel, entertain, and fish together. Her favorite places were in the mountains of Colorado (until her lung transplant prevented her from going to that altitude) and North Carolina. Those mountains became her place to pursue her love of horseback riding, fishing and photography. A celebration of Marty's life will be held at a later date. A private family service will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church's Columbarium. In lieu of flowers and food, Marty's family asks that donations be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Little Rock Funeral Home, (501) 224-2200. Marty's online guestbook may be signed at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.
