The 2019-2020 Kentucky Wildcats are off to an outstanding start in the early part of basketball season. They are the No. 1 team in the country and, at least so far, look the part. The success is in large part due to the play of freshmen Tyrese Maxey, Kahlil Whitney, and Keion Brooks.
It is never too early to think ahead to next year and start to imagine what that roster may look like. With early commits Terrence Clarke, BJ Boston, Lance Ware, and Cam’Ron Fletcher (and presumably a reclassifying Devin Askew), John Calipari is looking to build a monster class for 2020. After Cade Cunningham came off the board last week, buzz has calmed down in the Kentucky recruiting world.
However, the Wildcats could still potentially add another player (or two) to the 2020 class. The final date for a recruit to sign with a school during the early recruiting period is November 20th, so if a commitment is coming it will be coming soon.
All of the remaining targets with offers in the 2020 class are big men, and after completely striking out in the 2019 class, Calipari desperately needs to re-establish his program (cough, Kenny Payne) as a major development center for frontcourt players. Apparently, the living testimonials of Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns are not enough.
Greg Brown, Isaiah Jackson, and Cliff Omoruyi are the main guys to watch at this point. Jackson has set an officially decision date of November 16th, presumably so he can sign his national letter of intent before that November 20th date. Jackson is down to the Wildcats, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Syracuse Orange, although many believe the race is really down to Kentucky and Bama.
Even though the other recruits do not have official announcement dates, you can never rule out a surprise commitment. But if you had to place a bet, would you put money on Kentucky landing another player before the early signing period ends?
