The North Augusta Department of Public Safety on Friday found a body inside a car that was submerged in the Savannah River.

The department received a call about a car underwater near the boat ramp at Riverview Park. Officials have not identified the male body found inside and investigators believe the car was underwater for a long time.

The car had a Georgia tag and was two feet underwater when deputies arrived on the scene. The current drawdown at the river made the vehicle a little more visible, said authorities.

The coroner has been called to try to identify the body. The car is still in the river and crews are expected to remove it over the weekend.

An autopsy is scheduled to identify the body and cause of death.
