In these times of disunity, a group of Christians showed the city that they are united in their cause to honor the sacrifice Christ made. For nearly 20 years, the message has been repeated each Good Friday to bring together a community for Way of the Cross Walk.

Friday morning as clouds darkened above, Jennifer Ott's children couldn't wait for the march to begin.

"They were begging to come," Ott said of her youngest children. Ott has taken part in the event about seven times, she said. "I think it's a good way to witness and it gets you in the right mind set," said Ott, a member of the Alleluia Community.

The Alleluia Community and the South Augusta Pastors' Alliance sponsored the event. This year it began at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church on Lumpkin Road. Those carrying crosses led the walkers down Lumpkin to Ascension Lutheran Church on Wells Road then crossed Deans Bridge Road to Hillcrest Baptist Church and onto St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The unity of the event is one factor that brought Kimberly Patteson to bring her children Friday.

"We do it every year," said Patteson, a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. "It show (the children) how the community is together, that we all have one vision. And it renews your faith." It also helps the children see the real meaning of the season, she said.

"It brings home the sayings of Christ and the importance of being Christlike to everyone you meet and that it does make a difference," Patteson said.

Wanda Weeks of Curtis Baptist said she joined the march to reflect and remember what Jesus did for the world.
