A fire that severely damaged a church Thursday was likely caused by an electrical problem, according to the Augusta Fire Department.

The fire at Windsor Heights Baptist Church on Bullock Avenue broke out Thursday morning. The fire department received a call about it around 10:30 from two Waste Management employers who were on their daily routes.

“In reference to the cause of the Windsor Heights Baptist Church fire, the lead investigator has informed me that all indications for preliminary findings show that the cause of the fire was electrical,” the department's public information officer Michael Meyers said in an email. “It looks as if the point of origin for the fire was the attic.”

Meyers said the investigation is still ongoing and the four firefighters who needed medical assistance due to the blaze have been been released from the hospital and "are fine."

The church's pastor said Thursday is talking to a pastor at New Heights Baptist Church in Martinez about holding services there.
