A witness to the beating of a woman outside a Broad Street club earlier this month has been indicted on a charge of making false statements.

According to an indictment returned Tuesday by the Richmond County grand jury, Michael Gordon of Hephzibah is accused of lying to Investigator Jonathan Counts about the Aug. 3 attack on Brittany Stevens. Gordon allegedly lied to the detective that he saw a black man run up and hit Stevens with his knee.

The grand jury also indicted Hollie Carter, 21, of Evans, and Jordie Holt, 21, of Appling, on charges of aggravated battery and terroristic threats. According to that indictment, they are accused of beating Stevens, rendering her sight in one eye useless, and threatening to kill her.

Stevens was attacked behind The Scene nightclub on Broad Street about 3 a.m. Aug. 3, according to earlier reports in The Augusta Chronicle. Deputies were told the victim had a broken orbital socket and could lose sight in her left eye.

Concerns about violent incidents downtown prompted Sheriff Richard Roundtree to ask businesses there whose primary revenue is alcohol sales to develop a security plan to help address the situation. Roundtree said the plans should be submitted to the sheriff’s office no later than Aug. 30.
