Augusta Mayor James Wooddall warned that the city "was going to bear down" on beer parlors and all-night establishments that are creating a nuisance.

The stern order to "quiet down or close up" was issued by the mayor after Police Capt. George Folds reported numerous disturbances at an establishment on the 600 block of Broad Street.

"We had to send the patrol wagon to that place twice Friday night to bring in drunks and other violators. It is a real nuisance and we received a lot of complaints about it," the captain said.

"It is getting to a point where a respectable person cannot walk down the street for fear of being insulted when passing some of the places," Folds said.

Wooddall said the licenses of any of the places will be lifted by police "if these reports continue."
