A northbound lane on a section of Washington Road near Augusta National Golf Club will be closed starting Tuesday.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the lane will be closed from Woodbine Road to W. Vineland Road for construction. Crews will pour concrete for a sidewalk and complete asphalt work in the outside lane, weather permitting.

Work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday. The construction work is related to a tunnel being built near Gate 1 of the club, according to GDOT.

The tunnel will lead to the club's Global Broadcast Village –  a planned television and digital compound on the north side of Washington Road. A sketch of the plans showed a two-lane road going through the tunnel, which will sit about 10 feet beneath Washington Road, the Augusta Chronicle reported. The interior of the tunnel is 26 feet wide and 16 feet high.

The project will require the relocation of a 60-inch water line and the creation of a drainage system that will keep the tunnel dry, the Chronicle reported.
