ALLENDALE & HARBOR ISLAND - Dr. Edmun B. Richmond, 86, passed away on January 17, 2020 in Allendale after an extended illness. He was a resident of Allendale and Harbor Island, South Carolina.

He was born in New York City in June 1933 and was the only child of the late Adolph and Mona Richmond of Stamford, Connecticut. Edmun graduated from high school in Stamford and continued his education in Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Germany. He received two bachelor's degrees from Florida Southern in Lakeland, Florida, a master's degree from Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, and a doctorate from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He spent a year in Germany studying the German language at the University of Berlin and became fluent.

Edmun's lifetime career was in education in the United States and internationally. Edmun began in education as a college professor in Wheeling, West Virginia but spent most of his career in Atlanta, Georgia as a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. Edmun spent more than 25 years at Georgia Tech. He taught German a few years and at the time of his retirement he had a dual assignment as a professor of Modem Languages and Linguistics.

He was fluent in four languages (English, Spanish, French & German) and proficient for ham radio communication in two (Russian and Portuguese). His international research interests included the analysis and development of indigenous and foreign language curricula, teacher training programs, adult functional literacy programs, and language-by-radio services in developing nations. Edmun has published several articles in these areas and had participated in a number of pedagogical conferences and meetings in Africa, and the Indian Ocean area, under the auspices of the United States Information Agency, and various African Ministries of Education. He also served as a consultant to the Gambian Ministry of Education in their adult functional literacy and teacher training programs, and to the Burundian government in the development of a technical English program.

Edmun's interests were amateur radio operator {HAM operator WA4YO), traveling, spending time with his dog, and baseball. His favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves. He got his first ham license when he was in middle school and his excitement for DXing continued until he was unable to do so. He contacted ham operators from all corners of the world and made many friendships along the way. Once when asked to name a famous person he contacted as a ham, he said King Hussein of Jordan. During his ham operation he received a letter of appreciation from the United States Department of Commerce Weather Bureau in 1960 for keeping communities updated with conditions during Hurricane Donna.

Edmun's love of traveling began the year he graduated from high school when his parents gift to him was a trip to Jamaica. Ed has an extensive travel journal on four continents. A few of his favorite travel destinations were Germany, Reunion Island, Mauritius, Kenya, Cacassonne, Sete, Mayotte Island, Seychelles & Switzerland.

Ed leaves to cherish his beautiful memory, his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Mozelle (Toni) Richmond of Allendale and Harbor Island; his two step children, daughter Treyonde Allen of Allendale and son Kacy Allen (Nyala) of Grayson, Ga.; two grandsons, Tony & Robert Goodloe, both of Allendale; and two granddaughters, Nyjah & Kayli Allen, both of Grayson, Ga.; mother-in-law, EthelIngram Simmons of Allendale; sister-in-law, LaVerne Moses (David) of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers-in-law, David Simmons (Helen) of Fairfax & Reynold Simmons Sr. of Fairfax, Wheeler Simmons (Lena) of Allendale and Jacksonville, Florida; and a host of friends and extended family who loved him dearly. He also had close friends made through ham radio in England, Belguim, France, Germany and Panama.

Per Edmun's request his body will be cremated and his ashes shared with the tides of the Atlantic Ocean. A private memorial will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the home on Harbor Island.
