Lane closures on the Interstate 20 bridge are scheduled to begin today and continue until Feb. 1, as part of the project to replace the existing structures over the Augusta Canal and Savannah River.

According to Georgia DOT, the work zone for the $71.98 million I-20 widening and bridge replacement project is from just east of Riverwatch Parkway to the state line on I-20 east and from the state line to the Georgia Welcome Center on I-20 west.

Both east and westbound directions will be single lanes at time to allow contractors to receive materials and perform grading operations along the outside shoulders.

Right lane or shoulder closures on I-20 eastbound will start at 9 p.m. and continue nightly until Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. Closures will take place at different times every night.

Right lane or shoulder closures will begin at 8 p.m. and continue until Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. All lane closures and work are weather dependent and could be postponed, according to GDOT.

The four existing bridges are being replaced with one single-structure with three 12-foot travel lanes in each direction and 12-foot inside and outside shoulders over the Augusta Canal and Savannah River. The original bridges were built in the 1960s.

The project is expected to be completed by January 2022.
