May 30: Georgia COVID-19 deaths top 2,000, Augusta area sees little increase

Georgia surpassed 2,000 coronavirus deaths Saturday as the state Department of Public Health reported 19 more, bringing the state’s total to 2,004. An additional 468 cases were reported to push the state’s total to 46,311.

Screven County reported one new case for a total of 51, and Jefferson County reported five new cases, bringing its total to 41. All other area counties remained the same with Richmond at 595, Columbia at 248, Burke at 121, Wilkes at 33, McDuffie at 67, Jenkins at 19, Lincoln at 16, Warren at 18 and Glascock and Taliaferro at one each.

The death toll in the Augusta area remains at 44.

Doctors Hospital saw one new positive case, bringing its total to 71. There are 10 patients being treated in the hospital and eight are awaiting test results, spokesman Peter Moberg said.

University Hospital added two new cases Friday evening to reach 272 so far this year, with 13 being treated in the hospital, spokeswoman Rebecca Sylvester said. There were 53 new negative results to increase that count to 2,676.

AU Health System reported 23 new cases Friday to raise its total to 711 since its first cases March 13, including 15 patients being treated in the hospital. There were also 389 new negative results, pushing that total to 13,198.

South Carolina reported 11,394 cases with 487 deaths Saturday afternoon, including 194 cases and seven deaths in Aiken County and 51 cases and two deaths in Edgefield County.
