A Martinez woman has been arrested in the death of her elderly mother.

Anita Karen Jones, 65, has been charged with murder in the death of Mary Ready, 85. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, a domestic incident between Ready and Jones occurred July 25 in the 4000 block of Bahama Lane.

The following day, a family member went to the residence and notified the sheriff’s office. According to an incident report, Jones had been drinking that day and became belligerent and started to yell and curse at her mother.

After she was asked to quiet down, Jones shoved Ready causing her to fall down on the patio and cut her forearm and leg. Jones told deputies she didn’t know what happened to her mother other than when she woke up, she saw blood on the sheets and vomit on her mother’s bed, according to the report.

Jones was arrested for battery against Ready, who was transported to Doctor Hospital.

On July 30, the coroner’s office notified the sheriff’s office that Ready had died due to injuries sustained in the altercation. According to the sheriff’s office, an autopsy performed Saturday revealed the cause of death to be blunt impact trauma as a result of being pushed to the ground and the incident was ruled a homicide.

Jones is being held at Columbia County Detention Center.
