Editorial: Here’s your sign

Augusta Chronicle Editorial Staff

Last Thursday, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced the winners of its contest last fall asking for funny slogans for those electronic highway traffic signs that tell you to slow down or buckle up. You might have already spotted a few of the winning entries. Our favorite: "If you don’t wear a seat belt, please be an organ donor."

If the DOT is looking for slogans that specifically target the Augusta area, we have a few suggestions for flashing signs:

For rush-hour drivers on Washington Road: “Speed Limit: Zero.”

For commuters at peak hours on Robinson Avenue through Grovetown: “Thank you for not swearing. Very much.”

We borrowed this from Don Grantham, the Augusta area’s Georgia DOT board member. He rightly believes that better roads grow Georgia’s economy. For wherever you see endless rows of orange traffic barrels: “Orange is the new green.”
