The crowd may be quiet, but the engines will be roaring again at Deer Creek Speedway this Saturday night.
The race track located near Spring Valley will host its season opener at 6 p.m. Saturday, but the race will be held with an empty grandstand as fans are not yet allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deer Creek Speedway co-owner Cole Queensland said that the phones were ringing off the hook for two hours straight after the speedway announced it would open for racing earlier this week.
“Everybody’s pretty excited,” Queensland said. “It’s not ideal without fans. We need our fans and our drivers want the fans there, but we want to show that we can race in a safe manner. If we can do that, it’ll help get us fans in the stands (eventually).”
As Deer Creek opens, Chateau Speedway in Lansing isn’t ready to roll quite yet, but owner Mark Wytaske said he’s planning on getting things going eventually. The track will host a test run on June 18 and the plan is to have racing by the end of the summer.
“We fully intend on being open,” Wytaske said.
No grandstand tickets will be sold at Deer Creek Saturday and the main gates will be closed. The pit gate will be open and seating will be available on both the front and backstretch to allow for proper distancing.
All 5 weekly classes will be competing for track points.
