Raymond “Ray” Ilet Opsahl, age 93, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. Ray was born May 2, 1927 in Houston County, Minnesota, to Roy and Ida (Nelson) Opsahl. He attended school in Fillmore County, Houston County and in Austin, Minnesota.

In 1945, Ray was drafted into the United States Army, proudly serving his country until 1947. On September 10, 1960, Ray married Carol Pinney at the Presbyterian Church in Le Sueur, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with two children. Ray worked for Hormel Foods in Austin for over 50 years. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, American Legion Post 91, V.F.W. Post 1216, Masonic Lodge, Sons of Norway, and the YMCA. His hobbies over the years consisted of roller skating, snow skiing, water skiing, racket ball, and ping pong. Ray also enjoyed traveling all over the United States, Chili, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Mexico, Scandinavian countries, Europe, Caribbean Island, and Canada. Ray will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Opsahl of Austin, MN; son, Alan (Lisa) Opsahl of East Lyme, CT; daughter, Karen (Rafael “Ricky” Roberts) Opsahl-Roberts of St. John, Virgin Islands; five grandchildren, Adam Opsahl, Evan Opsahl, Ethan Opsahl, Megan Opsahl, and Eion Roberts; brothers, Earling (Martha) Opsahl of Austin, MN, Elmer (Tove) Opsahl of Rochester, MN; sisters, Gladys Opsahl of Rochester, MN, Idella Bailey of Rochester, MN; sister-in-law, Janice Opsahl of Austin, MN; brother-in-law, Ralph (MaryLou) Pinney of Rochester, MN; exchange students, Hernan Conejeros and Francesca Biancheri; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ida Opsahl; siblings, Rosie Opsahl, Ethel Opsahl, Leroy Opsahl, Milford Opsahl, Verna (Iver) Otterness, and Norma (Arnie) Johnson; and brother-in-law, Ronald Bailey.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2020 in Oakwood Cemetery. Procession to begin at 12:00 (Noon) on Saturday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin prior to the graveside service. Due to the COVID-19 protocol, we are requiring that everyone attending please wear a mask. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.
