Large scrapyard fire in downtown Phoenix contained; smoke seen for miles

A fire that occurred in a Phoenix scrapyard Saturday morning has been contained, according to Phoenix Fire Department officials. 

The fire, at a scrapyard near McDowell Road and Central Avenue, produced smoke that could be seen over the Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 interchange, according to a tweet by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Fire officials announced the first-alarm fire around 9:30 a.m. in an email. 

Officials said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. This is a developing story, and updates will be made as they are available.
