The heat isn't going anywhere this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix extended the excessive heat warning issued earlier this week until 8 p.m. Sunday. High temperatures expected to flirt with 110 degrees throughout the weekend.

Friday night was an unusually hot night across the Valley, according to NWS Phoenix. The temperature at 2 a.m. Saturday was 93 degrees, which, according to the service's Twitter account, "may be the warmest its ever been between 2-3 AM in the month of May."

Eventually, the low temperature overnight dipped to 84 degrees, which is still 11 degrees above normal for this time of year, NWS Phoenix noted.

We're pretty sure if somebody had been outside for that temperature drop they almost would've been able to tell something happened," NWS Phoenix said in a tweet.

Friday afternoon temperatures reached 112 degrees — the hottest it had been on that date in Phoenix since 1910.

Valley residents can expect little reprieve in the coming days as the calendar turns from May to June.

Afternoon temperatures forecasted for Saturday and Sunday ranged from 106 to 111 degrees, NWS Phoenix declared a period of "high-risk heat" and implored folks to stay inside and limit exposure in the sultry conditions.

Temperatures were expected to remain in the triple digits through next week with a possible break on Friday, which has a forecasted high temperature of 99 degrees, according to weather.com's 10-day forecast.

The historical average in terms of high temperatures this time of year is around 100 degrees.
