There’s one week left in February, which means there’s still time to celebrate Black History Month. From dance and drumming performances, to movie nights, to free art workshops, there are plenty of ways to celebrate and learn about black history and culture in Baltimore.
Second annual Black History Month “Storyteller Literacy Night”
Thursday, Feb. 21 — The Henderson Hopkins Partnership School Parent Teacher Association is hosting their second annual BHM “Storyteller Literacy Night” aimed at building community. The event will feature student and community performances, local authors, art, music, dance, poetry, history and more. Dinner and books from The Maryland Book Bank are included. The event will be in the school’s auditorium from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 2100 Ashland Avenue.
UPP Black History Month Movie and Dinner
Thursday, Feb. 21 — The Ujima People’s Progress Party will be playing “Malcolm X: Make It Plain,” a PBS documentary about the life of Malcolm X, accompanied by a spaghetti dinner, discussion and reflection of the legacy of Malcolm X on independent black political action. There is a suggested sliding scale donation of $10-$20. The event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Liberty Recreation Center, 3901 Maine Ave.
Black History Month Celebration at St. Francis of Assisi
Friday, Feb. 22 — St. Francis of Assisi Church Hall will be hosting “We Are One,” featuring dance and drumming performances, soul food, and poetry readings by St. Francis students. Vendors will be selling work created by black-owned businesses and a collaborative art project, the “We Are One” quilt, will be presented. The event will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3615 Harford Road.
February Youth Explosion: Black History Month Edition
Friday, Feb. 22 — Gethsemane AME Church is hosting a free movie screening of “Akeelah and the Bee” at 6 p.m. at 4100 McKendree Place, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.
Artists for Autism: A Black History Month Celebration
Friday, Feb. 22 — The Reeds Autism and Sarcoidosis Fund is hosting a celebration featuring local poets, singers, dancers, rappers, and spoken word artists. The free, public event is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 1600 N Calvert St..
Black History Month Free Art Workshops
Saturday, Feb. 23 — Kerplunk Family Art Drop and Creative Alliance have been honoring Black History Month by hosting a series of free art workshops for kids of all ages and families. On Saturday artist Desiree Warren will be teaching fabric collage art that celebrates women of color followed by a reception from noon to 3 p.m. at 3134 Eastern Ave.
Black History Program and Voter Registration Drive
Saturday, Feb. 23 — The Baltimore City Democratic State Central Committee is hosting its first annual voter registration drive event featuring African dance performances, a panel discussion, and a small reception. Families are encouraged to attend the free event from noon-3 p.m. at the Douglas Memorial Community Church located at 1325 Madison Ave, Baltimore, Maryland 21217.
Singing Sensations Youth Choir Black History Month Concert
Saturday, Feb. 23 — Morgan State University’s Murphy Fine Arts Center is hosting The Singing Sensation Youth Choir annual African-American History Month concert featuring Tony award-winning actor and singer Melba Moore. Tickets are $30-$35 and are available for purchase at the Murphy Fine Arts Center ticket office, online, or by calli 800-551-SEAT. The concert starts at 5 p.m. at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at 2201 Argonne Drive.
3rd Annual Black History Month Celebration
Sunday, Feb. 24 — B & Dee’s Baltimore Love, a volunteer group that provides food and other resources to people experiencing homelessness and low-income families, will be serving a hot comfort and soul food buffet and their signature brown bag lunches. There will be music from DJ Uzoma playing house, hip-hop, and Baltimore Club; and from Epic Premier Marching Band; and poetry by Anthony Pressley from the Baltimore Poets Society. The event will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 421 Fallsway.
Black History Month Movie Night “Hidden Figures”
Wednesday, Feb. 27 — Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc.’s is hosting a free movie screening of “Hidden Figures” and snacks from 609 p.m. at 6615 Reisterstown Rd, LL1, Baltimore, MD 21215.
