Annapolis has canceled its annual Memorial Day parade on account of still-standing statewide restrictions aimed at curtailing the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual wreath-laying ceremony at Susan Campbell Park has also been canceled, the city announced Friday.

A prohibition on large gatherings is among the restrictions instituted by Gov. Larry Hogan to slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the respiratory virus.

The parade usually draws scores of flag-waving residents downtown to celebrate fallen military members and veterans.

Mayor Gavin Buckley encouraged residents to think about those serving the country.

“We may not be able to gather together in the way we usually do, but we can take this time to be honor those and be grateful for the willingness of previous generations to think and act in a selfless way,” Buckley said in a statement.
