ALBION - A search is continuing for a man who shot and critically injured another man Monday night.

Albion Department of Public Safety Officers reported the shooting at 9:35 p.m. outside a home in the 400 block of Fitch Street and said a man who lives there was shot twice.

The victim, 41, had walked out of the house preparing to leave for work and was approached by another man who fired four to six shots from a handgun, according to Chief Scott Kipp.

The shooter then fled. A tracking dog from the Calhoun County Sheriff Department was brought in, but the gunman was not found. Detectives from the sheriff department also assisted at the scene.

The victim was taken to a hospital and was reported in critical condition, Kipp said Tuesday. A woman was inside the house at the time of the shooting.

"It appears it was a disagreement, and the suspect is known to the victim," Kipp said.

The shooting is about a block from the campus of Albion College, which issued a campus-wide lockdown notice through text messages and phone calls, according to Chuck Carlson, director of media relations.

"It was more out of an abundance of caution," Carlson said Tuesday. He said the lockdown did not last more than an hour.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Albion Detective Sgt. Nicole Wygant at 517-629-7824 or Silent Observer at 517-629-2700.
