Reservoir plans rejected over 'potato field fears'
Daniel Clark
Local Democracy Reporting Service
Plans to convert a disused reservoir into "much sought after" holiday accommodation have been rejected - after fears holidaymakers would have to carry their luggage across a field of potatoes.
The scheme, submitted to Teignbridge District Council planners by Roman Homes SW, would have seen the Kennford Reservoir become holiday lets.
The applicants said they would turn the current "eyesore" into something with an ongoing commercial use that would generate income for the area - according to planning documents.
But planners have rejected the proposals saying there's no safe and suitable access to the site and the conservation would be "wholly inappropriate and impractical".
A report said although the applicant owns the reservoir, there is a right of way in connection with the reservoir across the surrounding agricultural field which is in separate ownership.
The field was found to be in "continual agricultural use" and it's therefore "perfectly possible" the field will be used to grow crops such as maize or potatoes - which would make it very difficult to pass along the designated route other than by foot.
The applicant has the option to appeal against the decision.
Government urged to take action to save Appledore Shipyard

BBC News Online
Unions are stepping up a campaign to save the historic Appledore Shipyard from closure by
calling on the government to take ownership of the site.
The GMB said the yard in Devon could be saved if it was awarded a
contract to build a ferry for the Isles of Scilly.
Owner Babcock has announced the yard is to close next year.
The GMB said future work building new frigates and support ships for the
Royal Navy could be awarded to Appledore - with a ferry contract keeping it open
until then.
