  2. Monster ghost net found near Looe

An abandoned fishing net weighing about 150 kilos has been found on a beach near Looe in south east Cornwall.

It follows a similar haul in Perranporth on the north coast recently.

Amelia Bridge, the chair of Looe Marine Conservation Group said it was entangled with rope and trawler cable and extremely difficult to take away on a trailer.

The group is getting the so-called ghost gear turned into plastic pellets which will be used to make plastic kayaks by a company near Bristol.

  5. Masterplan approved for Axminster

    Daniel Clark

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A controversial masterplan that will see a 30% hike in the number of homes previously anticipated to be built to east of Axminster has been approved.

The masterplan provides a template for development of the area, which includes up to 850 new homes, 200 more than initially planned, employment and community uses, a range of public open spaces and the proposed north/south relief road that will stop traffic having to go through the centre of the town.

    Axminster

Developed by consultants on behalf of East Devon District Council, who worked with The Crown Estate and Persimmon Homes who between them have control of the land, the masterplan sets out guidance for future planning applications for the site.

The Local Plan envisaged 650 homes to be built as part of the North East Urban Extension to the town, but the masterplan increases the size of the urban extension and the number of homes to about 850 homes as without the increase, developers would not be able to fund the proposed relief road.

  9. Tamar toll could rise

    Ed Oldfield

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

The first rise in the cost of crossing the Tamar Bridge since 2010 has come a step closer.

Plymouth City Council has approved increasing tolls by a third, taking the cost of a car or van from £1.50 to £2.

Cornwall Council has already agreed the new prices despite calls for the tolls to be scrapped.

Now the plan has to go to the government for approval.

A report says the increases are needed to cover extra capital costs, lower income and more maintenance.

The bridge is self-financing and run by a joint committee of both the councils that jointly paid for its construction.

The Tamar Tag prepaid tolls will remain at a 50% discount of the cash cost.
