Snow hits Devon and Cornwall: 31 January

Traffic is beginning to move on the A30 eastbound, after gritters and ploughs managed to clear the road at Temple.

Ch Insp Adrian Leisk from Devon and Cornwall Police said drivers should go slowly and safely, taking extra care to avoid abandoned cars on the road.

A Cornish inn has made up makeshift beds for motorists stranded on the A30.

Staff at Jamaica Inn near Launceston, which was made famous by Daphne Du Maurier's classic novel of the same name, have laid mattresses out on the floor.

"We originally had seven rooms booked tonight - we now have all 37 booked," said manager Sammy Wheeler.

There have been "dozens" of road crashes across Devon and Cornwall as a result of the heavy snowfall earlier, police have said.

Officers are advising people not to travel unless it's absolutely necessary.

Motorist Darryn Lake described conditions in Ide, Devon as "treacherous", and said he had come across multiple collisions while driving in the Exeter area this evening.

Heavy snowfall has hit much of southern England and Wales, leaving hundreds of people trapped in cars as temperatures plummeted.

Snow is lying at least 12cm deep on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, and 5cm has been recorded in Sennybridge, Powys, according to the Met Office.

This already exceeds the maximum 10cm of snowfall that was predicted when the forecaster issued a severe weather warning for Thursday.

The snow, which has been travelling eastwards, has reached as far as Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent.

In Cornwall, on the A30, rescuers are continuing to free trapped motorists.

The wintry weather hasn't deterred surfers from taking to the waves in Cornwall - with some possibly making the most of an extra day off work.

Journalism student Georgette Beacham, 28, got caught in the snow while returning from Plymouth to Falmouth.

She said: "Everyone was driving slowly but particularly on the hills, cars were jack-knifing and people were getting stuck going up hill and skidding going down hill and having to pull over."

On one stretch of the A30 heading east towards Fraddon, a collision between a car and a lorry caused long tailbacks.

Ms Beacham's journey took four-and-a-half hours instead of the normal one hour and 45 minutes.

Some motorists have been stuck in the snow on the A30 in Cornwall for more than five hours.
