The appeal has raised enough money - nearly £200,000 - to build a bespoke bereavement unit, entirely through charitable donations.

A consultation evening provided the opportunity for those who have supported the appeal to give their input into aspects such as design layouts and colour schemes before building starts on the unit later this year.

Quote Message: The Snowdrop Appeal has captured the attention of so many: individuals, local businesses, families who have had their care here at University Hospital Plymouth and other charities. Daniel Clark

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Hundreds of people in East Devon say they are at risk of being homeless, according to a report.

The figures were collated from the housing need assessments that each claimant has to complete when they register for social housing, and a report was presented to the council's cabinet on Wednesday.

Of those who have a housing need:

    • 26% said they were at risk of being homeless, with 37% of 16-24 year olds at risk
    • Nearly 8% of people said they needed to escape violence or harassment
    • More than 42% said their health and/or wellbeing was made worse by their current home
    • About 6% said they needed to move because their current home is in very poor condition

East Devon District Council is currently working on a new strategy to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping.

Quote Message: Homelessness is one of the worst life experiences a person or a household can suffer and an effective homelessness strategy can make a massive difference to people experiencing homelessness. It is also a vital social responsibility, which East Devon takes very seriously and, as a housing authority, it is the council's aim to be outstanding at delivering this duty." from Andrew Mitchell Housing Needs and Strategy Manager, East Devon District Council
