A college has shut for the rest of the week after a 16-year-old student was stabbed in the chest in a fight nearby.

West Midlands Police said the brawl broke out in Belgrave Road, outside Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, at about 16:00 GMT on Wednesday.

The victim is in a critical condition, police said. A 16-year-old boy was arrested nearby on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives said a knife has since been recovered from the scene in Highgate.

The boy, from Highgate, who is not a pupil at the college, remains in custody while officers remain at the scene and inquiries continue.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, also suffered cuts to their hands in the fight, police added.

Officers want anyone who captured the altercation on their mobile phones to send them the footage.

The college said it would reopen after the half-term break.

"We can confirm that an incident occurred outside the college on Belgrave Road," a statement from the college said.

"Our thoughts are with the student who was attacked and his family.

"The college is closed for the rest of the week. Lessons will resume after the half-term holiday."

Insp Jim Mahon said officers were working closely with the college and had already spoken to many witnesses but believed there "could potentially be dozens".

"Students were filing out of college and I'm hoping that some may well have caught what happened on a mobile phone," he said.

"Clearly that could be very important evidence and I would ask anyone who has such video footage to get in touch as soon as possible."
