A fire has ravaged flats above a betting shop.

The blaze broke out atop a Southampton branch of high street gambling giant Paddy Power at about 05:20 GMT.

It began on the first floor or in the roof space of the terraced building, said firefighters, who remain at the scene bringing the fire under control.

The flats above the shop in Shirley High Street were unoccupied and no-one was injured in the blaze, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

An investigation into the cause has started.

At its height, about 30 firefighters tackled the blaze.

The road between Church Street and Anglesea Road has since reopened.
