Retired vet Jeanna Swan has been appointed the first ever female Lord Lieutenant for Berwickshire in the 220-year history of the role.

The Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing Street confirmed her post as the Queen's representative.

The 60-year-old succeeds Maj Alexander Trotter who retired in February after 14 years in the role.

Ms Swan was a senior partner with a veterinary practice before retiring last year.

She has been a trustee of the MacRobert Trust since 2001. The trust distributes funds to other charities for worthwhile projects.

Ms Swan is following in the footsteps of her father-in-law who was the Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire from 1989 to 2000.

She was appointed a deputy Lieutenant two years ago.
