England v India: Jonny Bairstow fractures finger in third Test

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow fractured the middle finger on his left hand on the third morning of the third Test against India.

The 28-year-old was struck when attempting to take a delivery from James Anderson.

Bairstow left Trent Bridge for an X-ray, which revealed what England described as a "small" fracture.

Jos Buttler took the gloves but Bairstow is expected to bat in England's second innings.

There is no indication whether Bairstow will miss any of the remaining Tests in the five-match series, which England lead 2-0.

Bairstow sustained the blow when attempting what looked like a regulation take after Cheteshwar Pujara left a ball during India's second innings.

Bairstow bent over in pain, then left the field with his hand covered by his cap.

Buttler, who has kept wicket in 15 previous Tests, made his way for his keeping kit almost as soon as Barstow was struck, perhaps giving an indication of the immediate significance of the injury.

England also have another keeping option in Ollie Pope in their side.

Therefore, any need to replace Bairstow behind the stumps is perhaps not as big of a concern as filling his spot at number five in the batting order.

England's batting problems continued in the first innings of the third Test, when they were bowled out for 161.

Slip,short leg and silly point,Rashid must be bowling,no it's Root,just a slip for Rashid the rest are outriders,real confidence boosting by the skipper.

Can someone enlighten me please. People on here advocating that Root should have the captaincy taken off him and that it should go to Buttler.

I can’t disagree that Root’s form has suffered after taking the captaincy, but why would anyone want it to go to Buttler instead. On what grounds is that advisable or desirable ??

I just can’t see where he has ever advanced his captaincy credentials.

To be serious for a moment- Burns & Foakes were the form players earlier in the season but have played very little 4 day cricket of late - yesterday they both failed. Well done ECB - T20 killing any hope of bringing potential test players through.
(and keep quiet about Mo please, England dont really want him back)

This is the perfect moment now to remove the gloves from Bairstow permanently and get hIm to concentrate on his batting at 4 or 5. Give the gloves to Foakes or Buttler but we need Jonny's batting much more than his keeping.

These type of injuries normally involve a break and dislocation. At least its his left hand. That will probably be it for the summer for Bairstow. This test is lost with 10 or 20 batsmen. Some major overhaul of the batting is now required. Root & Pope down the order. Vince back at 3 and Burns or Denly at the top. Curran back and Rashid out.

The list of Root's mistakes is too long but bringing Stokes back early & booting out Curran for MoM performance are two separate mistakes in their own right, then there is the ever present maltreatment of rashid.
Having bowled a handful of overs before today he has now become the most successful leggy at home since 1967 as he has taken six wickets. Rashid has improved but not in Jo's perception.

Didnt think it would be long before we had the Foakes bus pulling into HYS! Best keeper in England is Ben Cox. Best keeper/batsman is Bairstow with Foakes not far behind.

Perhaps prospective England openers should follow two simple dictums espoused on BBC decades ago:

1) Know where your stumps are (i.e. know what to leave, what you must play)
2) Play the first 40 minutes in an arc between mid on and mid off (i.e. play straight).

Add that to the dictum of limiting gaps between bat and pad, playing according to length and mastering the art of quick singles.

first ofall as an england fan I would like to congratulate india on getting back into this series!,if england were in their position I would be wanting to have 20 minutes at them before tea!,
as for the controversial catch,well in my opinion these bounce catches always look a bit iffy!,but joe root did not walk&that is okay but he should not have kept shakinghis head walking off as he is captain

@8.. And there is a half decent cricketer at Worcester whos back in the runs and wickets again after a tough winter.
But they love him there and wont want him to be picked for England to replace Rashid.

For the love of god, give Buttler the captaincy ( anyone but Root ), I think Buttler would flourish with the gloves AND captaincy

Bairstow has a fracture. Unlikely to play again for rest of season. Buttler will take over behind stumps. Silly idea to make Buttler captain. Very difficult as a stumper at best of times. However, Buttler has never captained anyone as far as I can see - at least not in red ball cricket. No experience and no evidence of any aptitude for this job.

Ha Ha, Do some of you really think that all the on field decisions are made by Root. Take a gander at the coaching teams signals next time you go to a test match. Most of the fields are preset anyway depending on the batsman at the crease.
Think about it, each batsman and bowler has a "SWAMP" record, Strength, Weakness, Ability, Matches and Probabity. Which are studied by the coaching team.

Eion Morgan should be our captain as a specialistist captain. Got no natural leaders in the Test side so if the selectors have got any lateral thinking, Morgan should be our captain. Root is the worst possible captain material what were they thinking.

That's an interesting shout. I'm against the idea of burdening Bairstow with the captaincy and gloves as i'd worry about his batting going backward when he is one of our best bats. Jos as skipper with the gloves, especially if he bats at 7 & therefore with a licence to counter attack makes some sense.

It has always been a major fault in the ECB Bluffers Guide to Cricket Management handbook that they take the best player & make him Captain

result : Captaincy weak & the Captain-Player looses his top-class-edge so England do badly :-(

Ian Botham
Freddie Flintoff
Joe Root

Someone needs to re-write the management Bluffers Guide ( urgently)
