England have named an unchanged squad for the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley on Thursday.

James Anderson is making progress with his calf injury and will play for Lancashire second XI in a three-day match beginning on Tuesday.

England say the 37-year-old will be assessed "on an ongoing basis".

The two sides drew the second Test at Lord's on Sunday, although Ashes holders Australia were given a scare by the England bowlers.

Anderson, who is England's leading Test wicket-taker, aggravated his calf injury during the first Test at Edgbaston, which Australia went on to win.

There is a longer gap between the third Test, which ends on 26 August, and the fourth at Old Trafford beginning on 4 September, which will give Anderson time to test his fitness.

Pace bowler Jofra Archer, who replaced Anderson at Lord's, impressed on debut with some hostile spells and speeds of up to 96mph.

Anderson bowled just four overs of the opening day of the Ashes and was unable to play any further part in the first Test.

Batsmen Jason Roy and Joe Denly both keep their places, despite their struggles with the bat in both Tests.

Roy, opening the batting alongside Rory Burns, fell to a three-ball duck in the first innings and made just two in the second.

Denly took a superb catch on the final day to dismiss Australia captain Tim Paine but he was unconvincing in periods with the bat.

Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow seemed to find some form at Lord's with scores of 52 and an unbeaten 30, and he kept well to Archer during his hostile spells.

Archer's pace and hostility troubled Australia's batsmen - Smith was ruled out of the remainder of the Test with concussion and is a doubt for Headingley, while his replacement Marnus Labuschagne was also struck in the grille.

Off-spinner Jack Leach, recalled in place of Moeen Ali for Lord's, also bowled with control and took 3-37 on the dramatic final day.

England have not lost a home Ashes series since 2001.

66...the Archer deliveries to Smith weren’t even head high....Smith just ducked in the second one....just very poor technique against quick bowling

Most of Archers "bouncers" were nothing of the sort. They were simply a yard short of a length at 92+ miles an hour that Aussie batsmen ducked into. Never saw Graham Gooch duck into Holding, Roberts, Marshall Garner et al. He swayed away or hooked them for 4. Just bad technique. Aussie batsmen have a weakness, real pace.

I wonder it Pat Cummins will come to regret his decision to bowl quite so many bouncers at Joffra Archer?

Odd that it's a fair and clever tactic when Australia do it but reckless and dangerous when anyone else does it. Then again...a balanced and objective outlook has never been standout Aussie characteristic.

seems our Aussie cousins are clearly worried about the prospect of losing Smith as all the talk is about shameful bouncers. Perfectly acceptable bowling, fully permitted, not outside the spirit of the game. If the shoe was on the other foot you'd all be saying the same. Roy not an opener though, and no place for him further down the lineup sadly. Now... can we just play cricket and stop whinging

I suggest you brush up on your knowledge of criminal law and the English legal system, in addition to cricket.

You’re so Australian. You’ve had so many 90mph bowlers that have hit rival batsmen with extreme force for decades, now as soon as the shoes on the other foot,everything isn’t fair and Archer is being a meanie weenie bully!

Even Smith knows when you’re in front of a 90mph bowler, there’s a chance you could be hit.

Or the treatment of our tail in this series, broad, archer have been peppered, used to be that sides had the manners to not put non batsmen at risk.

Look back at the history of Australian pace bowling if you wish to criticise Archer and also the West Indies pace attack in the 70's and 80's who were faster. No one criticised them...but when England do out come the bleeding hearts and say unfair etc. Pace bowling is all about attack and intimidation. Watch a video of Viv Richards against Jeff Thomson.......sheer class, pure cricket. Stop moaning

one bouncer an over is allowed ... is the issue that Archer bowls a good bouncer ? some of these comments such tosh . He did what he was brought in to do .
