Irish Premiership: Newry City 0-2 Institute

Watch: Institute inflict 2-0 home defeat on Newry

Goals from Gareth Brown and Joe McCready in a four-minute period before half-time gave Institute a 2-0 win over Newry City at the Showgrounds.

Brown scrambled the ball over the line after Kevin McArdle failed to cut out an Aaron Jarvis cross on 40 minutes.

Four minutes later Declan Carville flicked the ball onto McCready's face and the ball ended up in the net.

Institute remain eighth in the table but move level on points with Cliftonville while Newry stay 10th.

The hosts began the game in search of a first league victory since the start of September and a win would have taken them level on points with their opponents.

The two teams who were promoted from the Championship had met on the opening day of the season, a Michael McCrudden penalty proving decisive in a 1-0 Institute triumph on that occasion.

Institute had picked up only three points from a possible 18 in their last six outings but inflicted a second home defeat of the season on Newry.

Newry carved out a couple of chances in the second half but captain Mark Hughes shot narrowly wide of the post and Mark McCabe glanced Carville's seemingly goalbound header over the bar.

'Stute substitute Callum Moorehead forced Andy Coleman into a good save late on.
