Derry City moved up to third in the League of Ireland as goals from Greg Sloggett and Darren Cole earned the Candystripes a 2-0 win over UCD.

Former UCD midfielder Sloggett stooped low to head in the opener against his former club in a quiet first half.

Cole's 71st minute strike sealed the three points as the hosts failed to trouble Declan Devine's side.

Derry move above title holders Dundalk, who fell to a 2-1 defeat by Sligo Rovers.

After defeating UCD 3-0 at the Brandywell on the opening day of the season, Derry travelled to Dublin expecting a tighter contest as they chased a fourth straight win.

However the newly promoted side were unable to meaningfully test goalkeeper Peter Cherrie and found themselves restricted to long shots throughout the contest.

The Candystripes hit the front after 23 minutes when Sloggett, having been denied by a brilliant Conor Kearns save just moments earlier, met Barry McNamee's corner at the back post to nod home.

The influential McNamee nearly doubled the lead before the break but had his effort well blocked by Gary O'Neill.

With UCD continuing to struggle to make inroads in the final third Cole eventually put the game to bed, drilling a low effort through a crowded penalty area.

Devine's side are back in Dublin on Monday night to take on St Pat's Athletic before hosting table-topping Shamrock Rovers at the Brandywell next Friday.
