Hamilton's Lewis Smith has been named in the Scotland Under-21 squad for September's European Championship qualifiers with San Marino and Croatia.

Smith, 19, has featured six times for his club this season and netted twice.

Aberdeen's Conor McLennan, Motherwell's James Scott, Ayr United's Stephen Kelly and Rangers goalkeeper Kieran Wright are also in the squad.

Scot Gemmill's side host San Marino on 5 September and take on Croatia in Sibenik five days later.

Feyenoord defender George Johnston retains his place in the squad after featuring in March's games against Mexico and Sweden while he was still at Liverpool.

"This is the national team, it should be hard to get in the squad," Gemmill said. "It hasn't always been like that for the national youth teams.

"At the same time there are a lot of younger ones involved as well. We have a big responsibility to try and share the opportunity."
