Tyrone miss out on Division One final despite comeback win over Galway

Tyrone missed out on a place in next week's Division One final despite an impressive comeback victory over Galway in Omagh.

The Red Hands were denied a top-two finish by Mayo, who secured second place by defeating Monaghan.

Despite the loss, Monaghan retained their top flight status as defeats for Cavan and Roscommon saw them relegated.

Kerry's win at Dr Hyde Park ensured that the Kingdom finish top of Division One.

In a remarkable game at Healy Park, Tyrone trailed by seven points at half-time before a scintillating second half display saw Mickey Harte's side claim a 3-15 to 1-14 victory.

The Tribesmen, who would have booked their place in next week's showpiece with a win, dominated the opening 35 minutes with Shane Walsh causing havoc in the Tyrone defence.

Danny Cummins fisted in the opening goal after 17 minutes, beating goalkeeper Niall Morgan to a high ball launched into the square.

With Walsh's five-point haul before the interval the visitors looked well placed to return to the final for the second year in a row.

However Tyrone emerged from the break as a seemingly rejuvenated side, with Cathal McShane and Peter Harte making their presence felt in the full forward line.

Harte converted a penalty just two minutes before Mattie Donnelly dispossessed keeper Ruairi Lavelle and slotted into an empty net as Tyrone erased their sizeable half-time deficit within 10 minutes of the restart.

With Walsh now well-marshalled by the excellent Kieran McGeary, Galway were unable to find any fluency to their attack and their frustration began to boil over with Gary O'Donnell sent-off following two yellow cards.

Conall McCann rolled in a late goal as Tyrone ended a league campaign which began with three straight defeats in emphatic fashion.

Monaghan will breathe a sigh of relief that Roscommon and Cavan did not pick up points as despite their 3-15 to 1-18 defeat by Mayo, the Farney Men will play Division One football next year.

With a strong wind at their backs Malachy O'Rourke's side fell behind early to Kevin McLoughlin's sixth minute before Mayo keeper David Clarke produced a wonderful save to deny Karl O'Connell an instant response.

Jack McCarron was responsible for five of Monaghan's six first half scores but was powerless to stop the hosts stretching their lead through McLoughlin's second goal.

Much like Tyrone, Monaghan were vastly improved after the break despite Fintan Kelly being shown a straight red card just minutes after the restart,

Darren Hughes latched onto McCarron's pass to pull a goal back for the visitors but Mayo refused to surrender their lead, responding with a goal of their own through Brian Reape a minute later.

A run of six straight scores kept Monaghan in the hunt but the hosts did enough to close out the win.

Cavan were always expected to struggle in Division One having been promoted after a brilliant league campaign in 2018.

In order to have any hope of survival they need to beat a wounded Dublin who have uncharacteristically fallen to three defeats already this year.

In an evenly matched first half Dublin nudged themselves ahead largely thanks to the reliable boot of Dean Rock.

With the scores level, Kilmacud Crokes clubman Paul Mannion found the back of the net for the four-in-a-row All-Ireland champions.

A battling Cavan were unable to respond to the goal and despite looking far from their irresistible best Dublin did enough to run out 1-16 to 1-10 winners.
