Archer should come in and test out Smith immediately tomorrow. I thought he was rattled after being hit on the arm and not actually watching the ball.

Australia coach Justin Langer, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a terrible blow. It looked horrible at the time. We weren't sure what happened and your mind goes into overdrive with the new rules. Thankfully Steve is OK and is in good spirits tonight.

"We were, absolutely [happy for him to bat again]. He went through the concussion testing. We had lot of discussion with Steve. We wouldn't let him go out unless we were confident he could do the job."

On whether he should wear helmet with protection over the neck: "He doesn't wear because it is a personal choice. We know it is available but he can't feel comfortable with it on. They are there and players have to choose whether they want to wear them."

That's the key thing, no bowler runs up to try and hurt a batsman. Archer I reckon was pretty shook up, he wanted to check that his mate was fine.

It will be interesting tomorrow to see how Smith goes tomorrow. They will bring Archer on when he comes out. I would do the same thing. That is not malice. It is just part of the game.

Chris Woakes, speaking to Sky Sports about Jofra Archer's spell to Steve Smith: "That was serious, serious pace. To see the speeds coming up on the board it was no surprise. It looked seriously quick. I was at fine leg and could still tell.

"The crowd and the atmosphere built up and he was bowling at a world class player as well. It was great to be here.

"It is never nice to see anyone get hit. We are not in the game to hurt people. Ashes cricket will be played tough but you don't wish anyone to be injured.

"He was hit in an area we know can be dangerous and it wasn't nice to see. Thankfully it looks like Steve is OK. He is a great player and it took something special from Jofra to get him out of his bubble."

You don't make a Test career getting 30 and 26, you've got to get the 75-100 to make a difference for your team. Roy at the top I think is getting very confused, he has no idea how is supposed to play. If he is going to continue to open he has to go to one-day mode. He should be batting four, five or six. He isn't going to get runs by trying to play technically, the "Test match way."

Australia coach Justin Langer on Smith's injury: "It's hard to watch, he's in good spirits tonight and he passed all the concussion protocol. It was a nervous time. He'll have another test for concussion in the morning, thankfully his arm is OK as well. He is an incredible player and as long as he passes the guidelines I am sure he will be out there tomorrow.

"We have very strict guidelines on this and we have led the way on this. There is no way we would have let him come back out if he wasn't healthy. Archer has lots of tricks, he is an outstanding bowler, aggressive, skilful fast bowler and for the game of Test cricket there is nothing better than that."

Absolutely even stevens at the moment, England need to be batting at lunch, can they get a 250 lead before bowled out? For that to happen Stokes and Buttler need to play like we haven't seen them bat so far in this series. Stokes was as bad as I have seen him play today but the good thing is both frontline batsmen are still there.

England all-rounder Chris Woakes, speaking to Sky Sports: "I still think it is an evenly matched game. We are pleased we will not be batting last on that pitch but we still need to build that lead and make sure we feel safe to try and bowl them out.

"It was a great day of Test cricket.

"It is one of those games where if you get bowled out it could work in your favour. These declarations can be tricky. We are not in that position at the minute. We can't look that far ahead. These guys played well tonight. Hopefully we can bat well in the morning and with Jonny and myself to come we bat deep. Hopefully we can build the lead and at some point have a go at the Australians."

If it isn't possible for England to get the win, make sure you don't risk everything and go 2-0 down, don't just gift them the win.

Chris Woakes on taking Smith's wicket: "Whether that was anything to do with his mindset after being hit, he came out maybe he was just a bit out of his bubble and being hit may have affected that. He hasn't left many on the stumps and I was quite pleased he left that one.

"We have got 98 overs tomorrow so more time than you think and it's hard to put a number on it but we have got to bat sensibly. We have two guys at the crease who can accelerate quickly so as always the morning session will be crucial."

England all-rounder Chris Woakes, speaking to Test Match Special: "Jofra bowled with serious pace. To get Smith out of his bubble a bit which I am sure was great to watch, it was certainly just as good to play in.

"It's never nice to see players get hit and hurt. Ashes cricket is always tough but you still don't wish injury on anyone. Worrying times when you see someone get hit with what has happened in the past but thankfully Steve seems OK. I didn't think he wanted to go off so we always felt like he would come back out."

I think they can get another 100, it all depends on the start. But Stokes, after being dropped twice, survived and Jos Buttler played with decent control. If they can bat for half an hour of course they can get a 200 lead but they could lose four wickets inside the first 30 minutes and it could be Australia are chasing 150.

England did what England do - lost early wickets, including two in two balls to Pat Cummins - before Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler steadied the ship to finish on 96-4, a lead of 104.

We are in for a belter of a fifth day.
