Smith proved today he can play any innings. He can up his tempo. He is a wizard. The way he manoeuvres the ball into the space - you rarely see him hit the fielder.

The highest successful run-chase at Old Trafford is 294, which England did against New Zealand in 2008.
So just 11 years of history to overturn. No biggie.
England were lethargic on the first day. Watching them bowling before tea was like watching a different team
'It will take a miracle'

It was a miracle at Headingley and it will take a miracle to survive the draw here. To face that attack on this pitch now for 98 overs it will take an incredible innings - a Michael Atherton-style innings from all of those years ago back in Johannesburg.

I would be amazed if England manage to bat out tomorrow. And I don't even mean playing to win - just batting for the draw. I don't know that they can do it.

We are in for a ride tomorrow. England have got to arrive. We have been arriving on a morning a lot saying England need someone to step up. You think it will have to be Ben Stokes again. There have not been enough of the England team who have performed. It has been individuals. You can't win an Ashes series with only three of four players turning up.
'Anything is possible'
England coach Trevor Bayliss on Test Match Special: "Anything is possible. We saw that in the last Test match. We have got a couple guys out there and a few guys in the shed who are more than capable of scoring a hundred. We know it will be difficult on this wicket against this attack but as Ben Stokes showed last week, anything is possible.
"We spoke about last week about who will put their hand up and be remembered. It is another opportunity tomorrow for someone.
"When you lose a couple of wickets like that close to the close of play it is a little disappointing but we are pretty upbeat about what we might be able to do tomorrow. Hopefully we bat well, save the game and enjoy a beer after.
"We already had a chat. Everyone is psyched to go out tomorrow and be the one or two guys who go out and score a hundred tomorrow."
This England team consistently don't realise the situation of the game when they have to step up. They didn't realise on day one. They were a team of individuals on day one. Yes the conditions were tough but we looked outside and they were not together. The first time we have seen them together in the field was this afternoon. Too late. Jofra Archer got his paces up to 90mph but it was all too late for England.

Australia may have been a little shaky at 44-4 but Steve Smith comes out and rights the ship a little bit. The two early wickets make a huge difference. England have to show some fight if they are not going to lose this game.

John Main: Let's be honest everyone is just killing time waiting for the Leach / Stokes to win the Test tomorrow after tea.

Australia bowler Pat Cummins, speaking to Sky Sports: "They're coming out alright at the moment! The batting didn't go to plan. None of us expected the innings Smithy went out with, he was incredible. We'd have been happy to get though the night but Smithy was unbelievable. I'm feeling okay. One big final push tomorrow then a few days rest before The Oval. "
That was a phenomenal burst from Pat Cummins. What a launchpad he has given his team.
The Root wicket would have bowled a lot of players.

I think I dreamt there was a period this afternoon where Australia were rocking. Turns out being able to call on the world's number one Test batsman and bowler is very handy. Smith and Cummins have put the tourists on the brink of retaining the Ashes with two superb performances.
