Scottish Premiership: Reaction as 10-man Dundee hold Gerrard's Rangers

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, speaking to Sky Sports, is evidently not a happy man.

"It was not good enough," he said. "We didn’t look like a Rangers team, individually we didn’t look like Rangers players. We kept making stupid decisions, we never really carried out the game plan that we worked on for the last couple of games. So no surprises in terms of the result because our performance didn’t deserve better.

"The players were making bad decisions, complicating a game that didn’t really need complicating. We got off to a bad start, that happens, but we get a decision that goes our way, it goes 11 v 10 and we score from the resulting free-kick.So we were back in the game with a man advantage so there’s no excuse in terms of the performance. Collectively and individually it just wasn’t there."

Gerrard had hoped for a reaction from some of the players he gave chances to, but he indicated he is likely to revert to more recognized personnel for Thursday's Europa League game against Rapid Vienna.

"We never got a reaction today," he added. "I’ve been giving players chances but maybe that’s got to stop because they’ve not been taking them. It’s hugely frustrating for us, you’d expect a reaction given how poor it was mid-week. It’s a concern that we’ve performed badly twice on the spin. The last two performances were out of character."

Dundee manager Jim McIntyre was understandably "delighted" with his side's response to being reduced to 10 men after only 20 minutes, when Nathan Ralph was sent off for a challenge on Daniel Candeias.

"The referee gave the red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, which it's not because Andy Boyle is there covering," McIntyre told BBC Scotland.

"Originally I thought it was for dangerous and reckless play but it's not. The referee has confirmed that. I'm really disappointed that went against us.

"We will absolutely appeal it. You can clearly see that Andy Boyle is round on the cover."

Despite that, McIntyre was full of praise for the 10 men who battled to a point.

"Our goalkeeper Jack Hamilton did not have to make a lot of saves, but he had to come and claim a few crosses to relieve the pressure, which was good to see," he added.

"We felt there would be a few chances on the counter in the second half and I felt we could have done a bit more with one or two of them, but that's me being picky; the players have worked their backsides off."

Dundee striker Kenny Miller tells BBC Scotland his side have "got to be happy" with a point from their day's work.

"I think at the start of the game we were quietly confident that if we did our jobs well, we could get a win. But when you go down to 10 men after 20 minutes and they score the resulting free-kick to draw level, a good team like Rangers are always going to ask questions, make you defend and work hard."

"But we showed great character to hang on and and it's a huge point for us."

Rangers could have gone top of the table and they weren't good enough to take that chance. Dundee made it really difficult for them but they still should have been able to find a way past them to get to that prize of hitting the top of the table, and they simply didn't.

Dundee looked a lot more solid in the second half. It's as if the red card made them more focused. It's no surprise to me though, Jim McIntyre is under-estimated as a manager. They are well worthy of the result, they worked hard and you wonder what would have happened had they kept 11 men on the pitch.

So Rangers move up to second in the Premiership on goal difference above Kilmarnock, two points behind leaders Celtic.

But faced with 10 men from the 21st minute, you have to think that is a chance missed to draw level with their Glasgow rivals.

Dundee boss Jim McIntyre gives a fist-pump to the home fans and no wonder.

That's four games unbeaten, and his side are off the bottom of the Premiership for the first time since 1 September.

Do Dundee sniff a victory here? They've barely had an attack of note in this second half.

Rangers have a big game coming up in the Europa League on Thursday against Rapid Vienna, which no doubt Steven Gerrard had in mind with his team selection today.

But you can't imagine he's too happy with the way his side has played against 10 men for the last hour.

Half-chance for Rangers. Daniel Candeias cuts the ball back from the right touchline, and it breaks for Ryan Jack on the edge of the area.

He curls in a first-time shot with his left shot, but Jack Hamilton is firmly behind it in the Dundee goal.

Rangers are not happy about the award of a Dundee corner. Glen Kamara swings it in but referee Alan Muir spots an infringement by the hosts, a little too keenly it must be said.
