England end Wales' winning run - reaction

England coach Eddie Jones on BBC Sport: "I wrote down on a bit of paper before the game I thought we would win 33-12. We had a good team out there, a good mix of young guys, guys who haven't played for a while and I knew their attitude would be right.

"Wales had a lot of expectation to cope with. I thought that would weigh them down and in the end it probably did.

"We've had a squad of around 36-38 and there's been a great competitive spirit. Everyone wants to play for England, they know they have a good chance to win the World cup - today was just a selection day.

"It's exciting and we are looking forward to finalisng the squad of 31 tomorrow. This game was never going to be a be all and end all selection. You get to know which players are going to be able to do it.

"I was pleased for the young guys playing today. It's a special moment for those guys.

"These are tough games, we don't know what sort of work Wales have been doing - we might be at different stages of our preparation. All you have to do is worry about yourself."

David Beckett: That was quite a result from Twickenham. I expected the strong and experienced Welsh team to beat a fairly developmental England outfit, so the 33-19 full-time score was very pleasing and surprising.

Josh Verrills: Dan Cole put in a great performance to push his name forward for selection for the World Cup final squad this week. Several players played well today. Only player who didn’t make much of a noticeable impact was Piers Francis

Wales coach Warren Gatland says fly-half Gareth Anscombe and flanker Justin Tipuric are injury worries.

The duo came off as Wales lost at Twickenham and Gatland told Sky Sports: “We're not sure about Gareth. He’s going to get a scan tomorrow so we’ll see how that turns out.

“The message from the medics was just to see how it goes (after Anscombe appeared to be in discomfort).

“He didn’t do any further damage to it. He’s already done that.

“Sometimes players like to run off a knock – he wasn’t able to do that.

“That’s why with Justin Tipuric we made the change as soon as we saw him limping a little bit.”

Warren Gatland on Gareth Anscombe's injury prospects to BBC Sport: "We don’t know, we will get him scanned and see what the prognosis is. Fingers crossed, hopefully it is not too bad.

"There’s a risk, but you have to be battle hardened as well, and the guys want to play. You have to balance that against the injuries you may pick up."

I'm hoping Warren's right about the All Blacks - I'm heading to see them with my better half and have basically sold it on the fact they're the best side in the world - so England have done me a favour here...

I thought it was a decent game all round, you got the feeling England slightly tapered towards the game as Jones saw it as last chance to tweak his 31. Wales have been lung-busting in training, as you could see in the opening 15 minutes. You can see these two playing a heavyweight quarter-final.

England number eight Billy Vunipola speaking to Sky Sports: "To have a structured game suits us more and for most of that game we stuck to it. There were times Wales crept in but they're a great side and that's going to happen.

"I had goosebumps seeing Luds' (Lewis Ludlam's) tears at the start. They're still Test matches.

"I feel probably the best I have for the last two and a half years. The biggest challenge is mentally."

For me, that number one tag on Wales was probably a bit of a distraction.

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones: "We've gone on the last six to eight weeks, we came out the blocks a bit slow and we feel we let in two soft ones.

"We are well aware where we let ourselves down in that first half. We have another opportunity next week. There is going to be lots to work on for us.

England fly-half George Ford speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a good start. We said all week what a great opportunity it would be in front of a packed crowd. We wanted to rip in and work together, not everything was going to be perfect but we found a way.

"As players we wanted to start building a winning mentality. The four new lads making their debuts today, we'll enjoy tonight but there is still lots to work on.

"We started well, lost it a little bit in the middle but the pleasing thing was we got it back. We played to our strengths, the scrum and the line-out was a massive positive today."

A good performance by England’s, if not second string, but some of those who might not be on the plane. I though Watson was good, he is good in the air, nice to see him fully fit after his Achilles injury which is tough to come back from.

Wales weren't direct enough with the ball in hand. England were far too physical in big areas of the pack. Their big men carried and that was the launchpad for their win. Wales could not readjust after the start England made. Wales will know where they need to tighten up - we weren't at our effective best in defence and too many of our our last passes went down and we were out-muscled.

So no official number one world ranking for Wales after a disappointing performance at Twickenham.

They held top spot unofficially for just over 24 hours after New Zealand lost to Australia but the 14-match winning sequence has come to an end.

The slow start cost Wales and they were always chasing the game despite brief revivals in both halves.

Plenty of rustiness and handling mistakes that will need to be ironed out ahead of Japan but the major worry will be the injury to fly-half Gareth Anscombe who leaves Twickenham on crutches.

A tough day for this Wales side. We will see how they react against England in Cardiff next Saturday
