Tom Johnstone's hat-trick helped Wakefield beat Catalans Dragons in a high-scoring Super League contest.

Johnstone scored two of five first-half Wakefield tries, with Kyle Wood, Tyler Randell and Reece Lyne also going over.

Bejamin Jullien and Iain Thornley crossed for Catalans, but Johnstone's third try put the result beyond doubt.

David Mead and Brayden Wiliame scored consolation tries, before Trinity's Jacob Miller and Catalans' Mika Simon were sent off for clashing late on.

The two players were involved in a fight moments after Trinity's Craig Huby returned from the sin-bin, as a high-quality game ended in bad-tempered fashion.

England hopeful Johnstone added to his collection of spectacular finishes with his hat-trick, churning up the turf down the left to help secure Chris Chester's side a win.

Catalans, who won the Challenge Cup final for the first time in their history this season, have still not won a game in the Super 8s phase.

Wakefield climbed above Huddersfield to fifth after their third win in five Super League games.

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We've guaranteed a top six finish, which we've all got to be pleased and proud about.

"We approached the game with the right attitude, in the first half we looked good defensively and looked good with the ball.

"We kept giving them a leg up through poor discipline but couldn't be more pleased that we secured a top six finish."
