Warrington bounced back from their surprise Super League defeat at struggling Hull KR with a workmanlike 30-6 victory over Wakefield.

Trinity got off to the perfect start when Ryan Hampshire went over in the first minute.

But Warrington hit back to lead 16-6 at the break with tries from Ben Currie, Josh Charnley and Mike Cooper.

Blake Austin added a fourth try early in the second half before Jack Johnson went over with the game's final move.

Second-placed Warrington's win means they remain six points behind leaders St Helens - who they face next Friday - following their 36-10 victory over second-from-bottom Leeds.

But it was a far from convincing display by Steve Price's men as Wakefield, who have now lost six successive games in league and cup, enjoyed plenty of territory and possession, particularly in the first half.

Trinity could not have dreamed of a better start than when David Fifita surged through the home defence and offloaded for Hampshire to go over, but they were unable to breach the home defence again and were punished by clinical Wire.

Currie and Charnley both touched down following kicks from Dec Patton and Austin respectively, before Cooper latched on to a Patton offload to go over just before the break.

Austin danced through the visitors' defence to extend the lead early in the second half.

But although Warrington had the better of a sometimes scrappy second half, their only further points came courtesy of a Patton penalty and Johnson's first try of the season on the final hooter.

Warrington head coach Steve Price: "I thought our attack looked much better tonight and to score 30 points and to keep them scoreless for 79 minutes was very pleasing.

"We have a team who pride themselves on strong performances and I thought there were a lot of positive steps taken tonight.

"The win tonight was a fitting reward for the hard work the boys have been doing in training. We overpowered them in the end and could have run away with it and been a lot more convincing so we are heading in the right direction."

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester told BBC Radio Leeds: "It was a good first 40 minutes. We started the game really well, with real intent, and got off to a really good start.

"I don't think the score at half-time reflected the effort of the players - there was plenty of effort out there tonight.

"If we can bottle that first 40 minutes when we'll give ourselves a good chance of climbing that table, but we got beat by a better side."
