Work is set to start this summer on a dog park for a Co Down town.

Plans were put in motion last year to create a dog park in Bangor following the success of one in Newtownards.

Former councillor Noelle Robinson put forward the motion and council officers identified an area in Kingsland in the town as the best place for the dog exercise area.

Now it has been confirmed work will start this July on the park and it's hoped it will be ready later in the summer.

Bangor councillor Alistair Cathcart welcomed the news and said he expected it would be "extremely popular" with residents and thanks Noelle for her work in making the idea reality.

"I'm looking forward to it opening as soon as possible," he said.

"It will be interesting to see how it works, they did it in Newtownards because as Londonderry Park was getting a redevelopment and they wanted to ban dogs from the pitches so it was so restrictive in there they decided to create a dog park where they could room freely.

"Bangor isn't the same as there are places you can let your dog off the lead. I think people who are worried about letting their dog off the lead will love the area."

He added: "The same rules apply regarding dog fouling, you must pick up after your dog, the area will be patrolled and fines handed out if a dog owner fails to pick up after their dog."
